Trailblazer Verdant String eBook Michelle Diener Reviews

  • This was a good read with plenty of action and a touch of romance. I like Ben and Tally. Too bad they probably won't get to work on the same team in the future. They work well together and Ben accepts Tally and her strengths without a problem.
I sure hope that we learn more about the Ghost Ship and Tally's little helpers.
  • I've enjoyed all Michelle's space books. The Verdant String books and Class 5 series especially. I would like to know if Tally integrated with her "little helpers" and also what happened to the Caruson who surrendered. This, in my opinion, is the best book in the series to date!

I hope there are plans for more books in this series.
  • I honestly don’t remember much from the previous Verdant String series. I would have appreciated more references. However I still thoroughly enjoyed Tally’s experiences and really want to know what a true bonding with her little helpers would be like! I hope there is another book coming with Ben’s and Tally’s partnership. I am glad to see that the Trail was beneficial for all including some much needed intel and hopeful for Frangi’s recovery. This was an exciting ride!
  • Loved this book! Fantastic storyline, lots of action and intrigue, and, of course, romance! Ms. Diener is a master storyteller and this book grabbed my attention immediately - I couldn't put it down! Highly recommend!
  • Part adventure, part mystery, and quite complex. We are treated to a trip through a dangerous jungle and don't quite know who is on what side. Part of an interesting series of loosely connected novels with highly developed and interesting characters, but overly stereotyped governments.
  • This is another in MD's adventure series involving strong women who have to cope with difficult situations. I love how the women in her stories just get the job done; no whining, no complaining, they just do it. It makes a nice change from most of the books out there.
  • This book starts off okay with a female soldier who is coming to grips with the trauma of being stranded on a floating, abandoned ship with no other living person on board, living in the dark for most of the time, and lacking food/water towards the last few days before she is rescued. The interesting part is how during her time on the ship, her body is benignly invaded by an alien presence. I say benignly as it doesn't physically hurt her and instead helps her survive on the ship and later gives her Spidey type senses and enhanced physical capabilities which help her later. I did wish there was more world building throughout the book about the "ghost ship" which she was abandoned on - it was just vaguely concluded that it must be from a civilization similar to other humanoids, but zip on the benign alien presence in her body. Also wish there had been more description of the differences between the various Verdant String planets - i.e. what makes a Kalastonian different from an Arkhoran? Another disappointment is the lack of background on the heroine - you only know her from the current day's action, there isn't anything about her background, prior to being stranded. Not even sure I know what she looks like.

But the two biggest disappointments are the poor choices of the heroine/hero. I could not believe they decided to have sex while they are hiding from the enemy in the forest. They are trying to keep out of sight and quiet while there are patrols actively looking for them and despite the hero being a Special Forces soldier, they decide to go for it? Put on the dunce cap! The other big "you gotta be adding me" is how they continually allow a guy whom they know is the enemy, live - they have no hesitation about killing the others, but they keep allowing this guy who betrayed the group early on and they know is collaborating with the enemy to live. Now I could see if there was a strategic importance such as he has vital intel or can lead them to a larger goal, but no, they just stupidly keep letting the guy exist and obviously this backfires on them.

I really, really like this author. Except for a couple of her historical romance books (genre not my thing), I have read all of her books which are fantastic with the unique worlds she's built and most importantly, the smart heroine. Although this book was a fast skim to the ending towards the last 1/3, I still highly recommend this author. Her Dark Horse series is a 6 star experience.
  • This is an expertly crafted and suspenseful read with plenty of action and also a romance for the central character Tally. I was so engrossed in the story that after a while I felt as if I was living and breathing alongside Tally and her fellow trail walkers on the planet Veltos where much of the book is set. The story worked well for me as a standalone, although I feel that if I had read the earlier books in the series they would have only added to my enjoyment.
I loved Tally the central character. She is one strong woman despite the trauma she has recently endured of being the sole survivor on a ghost ship, where an alien entity has invaded her body and mind. This makes her vulnerable as she finds herself at war with herself. For although whatever it is that has burrowed inside her is determined to protect her, its host, from harm, she is sometimes compelled to act in ways that are at odds with her free will.
Sent on the Veltos trail to aid her recovery from what was a disastrous mission, she is at pains to conceal what has taken up residence inside her and her oftentimes new abilities. However, she finds it increasingly difficult to keep her secret from fellow trail members as they find themselves the quarry of an enemy who is stalking them. It is especially difficult to hide the truth from Ben Guthrie, a member of the special forces who is on a mission to find out what really is going on on Veltos. Ben too is a strong character and a worthy mate for Tally.
I found the whole premise of the book, combined with the central characters of Tally and Ben and the secondary characters, made for a cracking scifi adventure. The read has plenty of tension and suspense as the plot develops and truths reveal themselves. I was on pins with how far Tally could control the entity inside her and how others would react when and if its presence was revealed. and also whether they would survive the enemy stalking them.
Thoroughly recommended for lovers of sci-fi and space opera who also love romance.
Please note that an ARC of this book was given t me by the author for a fair and honest review.
