This book describes the author’s journey to the Dyatlov Pass in the northern Ural Mountains in the company of Russian Dyatlov “Obsessives”. It is also a book for people who already know the Dyatlov story. The physical locations relating to the Dyatlov Incident are examined and discussed as well as competing theories from some of the group members about what happened. The second part of the book takes a critical look at the autopsies. This is followed by an intensive look at some ground-breaking research on the Dyatlov negatives by Valentin Gerasimovich Yakimenko. The final part of the book discusses the statements made by the two senior figures in the investigation and finishes with a scenario as to what may have happened on that fateful night of 1/2 February 1959.

"I became familiar with the Dyatlov Tragedy several years ago and read several books about it including this author's first book on the subject, Mountain of the Dead, the Dyatlov Pass Incident.Mountain of the Dead: The Dyatlov Pass Incident When Journey to Dyatlov Pass: An Explanation of the Mystery arrived, I read it in two sittings. In my opinion, the author does an excellent job of bringing this perplexing tragedy to the English-speaking audience. In his first book, he presented the majority of the popular theories to the incident at the time and now follows that up with his 2nd book. His 2nd book also provides the reader with a personal, ride-along as the author travels to the scene of the incident and gives us a glimpse of Russia and how difficult it is to get to the site 55-years later. While this tragedy took place over half a century ago, he is mindful that family members and friends of the victims are alive and they deserve respect. I enjoy the author's casual and informative writing style. I've also read the author's book, The Lighthouse The Mystery of the Eilean Mor Lighthouse Keepers The Lighthouse: The Mystery of the Eliean Mor Lighthouse Keepers again, he does a great job with his research and treatment of the story. The author is respectful of everyone's theories of these incidents and doesn't make judgements. He presents each theory and material and lets the reader choose. After finishing Journey to Dyatlov Pass, I decided to order another of his books which should arrive soon.
While this book was written for those familiar with the incident, a few minutes of online reading will quickly bring you up to speed. I would suggest ordering both of his books for a comprehensive view of the incident. Maybe you can solve the mystery! This book provided me with a theory that I happen to subscribe to and I think it, or a variation of it is the answer. The author managed to obtain interviews translated into English that I've never read before. It's an excellent read and well worth the shelf space to those interested in this riveting story."

  • I really enjoyed this book. I have read other books about the Dyatlov incident, so knew the history. This book focused on the authors trip there, which I found fascinating. The second half is about different theories. After reading this I came to the conclusion it was the military that was involved from start to finish. Thanks Keith! I liked it better when it was mysterious and maybe supernatural. The author makes a good case for military involvement. I guess now I am satisfied as to what happened. Keith did a great job on this book and I would recommend it to anyone who has read the prior history of the Dyatlov incident. But I think even if you never read anything about it, you get enough information from this book. Very enjoyable. Very informative
  • I thought this was going to be more a documentation of the original missing party with facts provided so the reader could speculate what happened being fully informed. I am not interested in hearing about the author’s hiking experience unless he too goes missing under the same circumstances. Too much of the author and not enough topic.
  • Without giving any spoliers away I will assure the reader that after finishing this book, he will be fairly convinced that we now have an answer to this most intriguing mystery. As with previous books McCloskey handles the case like a modern objective Sherlock Holmes. To say the evidence he amassed is overwhelming would be an understatement. Like most fans of this mystery I would always be skeptical but its hard if not impossible to dispute the explanation the author deduced. Apart from that, it is a fun read and one I look forward to reading again. Along the way to the conclusion of the mystery, is a great adventure, the authors journey to the location the hikers died. A journey that is put in huge jeopardy by an incident that happens to McCloskey that is not only a bit on the scary side, but ripe with humor with those he encounters in his quest.

It's always difficult to review a book without giving away too much, but It is not often I literally couldn't put a book down, this is one of those times. If you love a mystery, a little adventure, humor and a satisfying solution this book is for you.

One thing, if you are not familiar with this mystery, you should read his first book before this, as this is the sequel, and solution to that most baffling and terrifying event.
  • A very enjoyable read. Mr. McCloskey has an informal writing style that makes the journey back to Dyatlov Pass both fun and adventurous. And great news! The answer to the mystery actually lies within the pages of this book! But be aware the real answer is not the one the author provides at the end. There is a discouraging pattern among Dyatlov Pass books to present all the known facts about the incident and then offer up a conclusion that does not fit all of those facts. That is also the case here. However, if you read carefully and keep a truly open mind, you can piece together the real solution to the Dyatlov puzzle by using the intriguing new information the author provides. In this respect, the book is a major step forward to solving this mysterious event and is highly recommended.
  • Good insight, and potential insight, into the bizarre 1959 episode. The best thing about this book is the fact that the author, Keith McCloskey is fully open-minded during the course of the book. He presents what is known, acknowledges what is unknown and/or speculation, and offers the reader theories, never claiming any of the theories to be fact. Don't expect to come out of this with full knowledge of how and precisely what occurred that cold February night, because nobody knows for sure, and the best thing about McCloskey's book is that he admits that. Yet he offers the reader many options, virtually all with reasons why it could or couldn't have been. Will we ever know for absolute certainty? Highly doubtful. But it sure makes for interesting speculation, from start to finish. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in the Dyatlov Pass incident. Unless you insist on knowing what may never be known.
