To be an intermediate speaker you need 2,000-4,000 words so you won't get there, but this book does a better job than a lot of Arabic textbooks at giving you vocabulary you will actually use instead of politics-heavy vocab that is not very useful if you want to speak to people every day. • It's nice to study with this. I just wanted to say that there are only 640 flashcards. They are quite small, 1 5/8" x 7/8". I can use them but with some dexterity. Maybe not suitable for a child. The book advertises 1000 words; the other 360 words are "further vocabulary" with no flashcards. The appear in separate tracks on the audio CD.
  
  I listen to the "core vocabulary", the ones which have flashcards, when out and about or when exercising. There is no English in the audio, so you have to start memorizing the words before you can get anything from the audio by itself. I think this is an advantage, if the audio had English then I wouldn't have time to remember on my own what each word means, and it would take longer to get through it. I guess the ideal study routine is go over the words using the audio and the book, then memorize them Arabic -> English, then start listening to the audio by itself, trying to remember what each word means, while at the same time memorizing the cards English -> Arabic. The book intro suggests using the Leitner box system, but with envelopes. I think envelopes are dumb, I just use rubber bands, with little blank cards on top of each bundle to identify it. Anyway, with this routine I have to skip over the "further vocabulary" and "useful phrases" tracks on the CD, since I had no flashcards with which to learn them beforehand.
  
  I would recommend this book, and I would buy books from the same series for other languages. I just think there is a bit of false advertising going on with the "1000 words + flashcards" on the front cover. It's really "640 words + flashcards, and 360 words without flashcards".
• This book is pragmatic, simple to use, and not inaccessable, either.
  
  Its shortcoming is a lack of grammar. The book does not rely on comprehensive sentences or passages, which cements vocabulary. Rather, it primarily relies on the 'flashcard' method, which has its own worthy success rate; and little puzzle games, a style very similar to the "Your First 100 Words in Arabic". This was cool and quick.
  
  I would purchase this book if I were toward the last half of al-Kitab 1 or the beginning of 2 for academic supplement. After you've matriculated AKII, there's no point, as most of this stuff you can learn during immersion or from other texts. You can literally finish this book in a week if your desire to learn Arabic is high enough. It's a good book. But if you're competent already, you don't need it.
• This book is well designed with basic vocab and activities, including flashcards. It appears to be a very good book for building basic vocab. The only reason I give it three stars is that I expected vocab that was "Beyond Beginner Arabic" from the title and description. I even did the "Look Inside" perusal of the book and thought it looked good. But when it arrived, I saw that it is fairly thin (112 pages followed by about 16 pages of flash cards). The vocab is good, solid stuff that needs to be mastered in order to "move beyond beginner Arabic", just as the title claims, but if you have the impression that the vocab in this book is itself "beyond beginner Arabic", as I did, you will be disappointed.

• I would like to echo the positive reviews here.
  
  -The cards are small and convenient (and fit into a medium sized 7 day pill organizer).
  -If you are unfamiliar with pronunciation, the book has transliterations of everything along with diacritical marks.
  -The cards are easy to separate from the back of the book and the font is readable.
  
  If I had the energy to make my own book like this, I would improve the book by
  -A CD to challenge your vocabulary skills while driving. I would also add basic sentence exercises too (I made my own mp3's to help).
  -More exercises in the workbook to help you retain the vocab.
  -Some cards seem to have plurals and others do not.
  
  I really recommend this book to beginner/intermediate level students who are hungry about learning Arabic.

• If you have studied Arabic for sometime, then you know that it is a language that consists of many irregular plural nouns (aka the broken plural). I'm happy to say that I finally found a book that provides the plural form of nouns (in parentheses) alongside its singular form. Thaaaaank yoooou.
• Really good book to learn basic Arabic vocabulary. The pop-out vocabulary flashcards in the back are especially useful.
• Actually there is a little grammar but only to help understand the words presented in this book. There are 16 sections with photos or cartoons for those who need visual input. The accompanying CD was immediately imported into iTunes for my iPad. The CD has short sections of words for pronunciation practice. This book is not for the absolute beginner but the student who is further along in study and needs some reinforcement. I deducted a star because the flashcards are small and not preforated. The front side presents the english word and the section number of study in the book, and the back side is the Arabic word. There are exercises like crosswords and word search with the answer keys in the back. There is also a section with instructions for how to take an arabic language exam. Overall this book will be helpful in reinforcing my Rosetta Stone learning.
