"The first part of the book talks about how short-term goal setting is a crippling social issue. He then goes into more personal insight into mastery, as well as ways we fail or short-change ourselves. It's a quick and easy read - I basically polished it off in one evening - but that's a compliment to how well it kept my attention."

Mastery The Keys to Success and LongTerm Fulfillment George Leonard Books Reviews
- This book is a quick read that changed my life!
The process Mr Leonard describes in this book is straightforward, easy to understand, and even easier to apply - as long as you can learn to love the journey! This will offer you a great insight into your successes, and other results, and show you a clear path to achievement. You'll be able to understand your own behaviors, and those of others, better and be more mindful of them to help yourself and others achieve your goals while enjoying the process (which is the actual goal itself).
A quick warning this can be a painful read, since we all have times in our lives when we have, and even still will, participate in the patterns Mr Leonard describes as 'Anti-Mastery'. Many have a problem with this part, but it is necessary to accept and come to terms with it, there is no shame in the feedback from past adventures unless you continue to not learn from them, this requires humility and letting go of pretense. If you can manage that you'll be on the path to Mastery sooner than you realize, without even realizing it!
An excellent read in conjunction with Flow The Psychology of Optimal Experience (Harper Perennial Modern Classics) or Finding Flow The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life (Masterminds Series). Mastery describes how to love the path and progress, Flow describes how to stay engaged and progress when on the 'plateaus' that we all encounter along the path of Mastery. Either on their own is incomplete. - I recently read both this book as well as Greene's. I am here to write that not only is this book more concise, it is also more entertaining, better written and more useful in the practical sense.
George Leonard takes the reader through the 5 steps of mastery
1. Instruction
2. Practice
3. Surrender
4. Intentionality
5. The Edge
In each case, there are practical applications, interesting vignettes, and entertaining reading. The book is darn near a page turner, and that's pretty unusual for a book of this genre.
While perhaps not as well known, or now getting older and less publicized, this is one of the finer books of its type out there. A must read and must own. - One of the best books I've ever read.
Specially in a world of instant gratification, I think this is a must so everyone understand what it really means to achieve success or more than that to enjoy what you do in your life and what it really requires to develop our skills into mastery. - I cannot say how much I love this book. However, I know I had to be in the right place in my life to appreciate it. I will give copies to people as gifts for the rest of my life with full awareness that the timing could be wrong or right for them. As for me it will always be one of my favorite books defining my life vision as I move forward.
- This book really changed my approach to a lot of things in life, it taught me how to approach the most menial tasks in life and the most significant with determination and focus. It also teaches you a lot about self-motivation by identifying areas in life that you may not be giving proper attention to, or giving too much attention to. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to become a more focused and balanced person, because you will find success through the path of mastery that Leonard outlines if you actively apply his lessons to your own life.
- One of those books that will have a great and positive impact. Leonard has got it right. When you begin to apply mastery to the "in between" moments, which happens to be a big majority of life, it's a game All the keys and principles are well explained and organized to easily understand and apply to every day and common place life. While the documentary film by the same name was a great inspiration, I found the book to be key.
- The first part of the book talks about how short-term goal setting is a crippling social issue. He then goes into more personal insight into mastery, as well as ways we fail or short-change ourselves. It's a quick and easy read - I basically polished it off in one evening - but that's a compliment to how well it kept my attention.
- This is one of those books that should be mandatory reading for all human beings. A personal development book with an insanely strong message, yet different from "all other personal development" books. Just read it, master your craft, master your life. We as human beings can master ourselves or die with a bunch of unrealized potential. Be the master instead.
